After nearly cracking the Santa Cruz Warriors roster last season, DLeagueDigest.com has learned that the groundbreaking Filipino player Japeth Aguilar will not be a part of the 2013 NBA D-League draft.
After speaking with Aguilar’s agent Marvin Espiritu, it appears that Aguilar is staying in the Philippines at least until February when his contract is set to expire. Espiritu expects Aguilar’s NBA dream to be put on hold for a bit, “I do know that he is still hoping that someday he will make it in the NBA. But I doubt if he will be coming back soon.” Espiritu said.
Aguilar made headlines last season when he was selected in the seventh round of the 2012 NBA D-League draft, but ultimately fell short on seeing the court as a member of the Santa Cruz Warriors. Aguilar currently is a member of the Barangay Ginebra Kings in the PBA, and according to his agent, “he is a member of the most popular team in the PBA.”
The 6’9” 225 pound forward/center is averaging 10.5 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in 28.1 minutes for Ginebra. Perhaps with his familiarity of the NBADL, Aguilar will give it another go in the D-League someday, but it seems like that won’t happen for at least another year.
