The NBA Development League released its schedule yesterday for the upcoming 2010-11 season. The season tips off Friday, Nov. 19, when eight of the league’s 16 teams are scheduled to begin play. This season marks the 10th anniversary for the D-League, which began play during the 2001-02 season with just eight teams.
The defending D-League champion Rio Grande Valley Vipers open the season at home on Sunday, Nov. 21, against the league’s lone expansion team, the Texas Legends. Texas replaces the Los Angeles D-Fenders, who are on a one year hiatus, in the D-League’s Western Conference. They are joined by Rio Grande Valley as well as the Austin Toros, Bakersfield Jam, Idaho Stampede, New Mexico Thunderbirds, Reno Bighorns, Rio Grande Valley Vipers, Texas Legends, Tulsa 66ers and Utah Flash. The Eastern Conference consists of the Dakota Wizards, Erie BayHawks, Fort Wayne Mad Ants, Iowa Energy, Maine Red Claws, Sioux Falls Skyforce and Springfield Armor.
We now know all the whens and wheres, but because of roster turnover from year to year, it will still be a couple months before we know who will be playing in these games. That makes it hard (read: impossible) to prognosticate win/loss records or get too amped up about any particular team matchups, but there are a few important dates to circle on the calendar.
From Jan. 10-13, the D-League will take center stage as the sixth annual D-League Showcase heads to South Padre Island, Texas, for for days of games in front of scouts and personnel from all 30 NBA teams. Each D-League team plays two games during the Showcase, which serves as a great coming-out party for many rising talents in the D-League.
While the D-League Showcase is the main attraction in January, All-Star Weekend is the must-see event of February. The fifth annual NBA D-League All-Star Game is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 19. Additionally, the league’s top stars will also compete in Dream Factory, the NBA D-League’s skills competition featuring a 3-point shootout and a dunk contest that annually entertains as much—if not more—than the NBA’s dunk contest.

Like it or not, the D-League’s unbalanced schedule is back for another year with some teams playing each other as many as 10 times while others meet just once. The D-League does this to promote local rivalries and save on travel costs, often having teams play two or three games in a row against the same opponent on a roadtrip. As a result, there are some definite imbalances that could have playoff implications down the road, including teams who play all four games against a particular opponent on the road. With that in mind, here is how the 2010-11 schedule breaks down for all 16 D-League teams.
