Talkin’ poetry, nerdiness and life in the D-League with Lanny Smith

Earlier this week, I chatted with Idaho Stampede point guard Lanny Smith, who, for those scoring at home, has a great deal to say on more than a few topics. What started as a conversation about his performance this season morphed into a discussion featuring Smith’s insights on practicing against Tyreke Evans in Kings training camp, the challenges of recovering from a foot injury doctors said would be career-ending and the moving story of how he developed a passion for poetry, as well as a host of other subjects.

You can use the audio player below to check out our full discussion, which begins with Smith assessing his play thus far in the 2009-10 campaign.

Thanks again for chatting this week, Lanny. Your voice is welcome back in this space any time.

In other D-LeagueDigest news, barring some sort of unforeseen weather disaster on the East Coast, this morning marks the beginning of a heavy travel week for site purposes.  I’ll be making a weekend road trip up to Springfield, Mass., for the Armor’s games against Iowa and Erie tonight and tomorrow, taking Sunday to rest back at home and then hitting the airways first thing Monday morning for a trip to Boise, Idaho, for the D-League Showcase. Should be quite the experience, and we’re looking forward to having plenty of new content coming at you in the days to come. Be sure to check in on site and keep up with us (read: me) on Twitter as well!

Best wishes to everyone for a happy and healthy new year, and we’ll catch ya on the flip side.

I listened to your interview with Lanny. I have known him for years. He is one of the nicest guys on Planet Basketball. I followed him from high school and AAU on. I lived with him through his injury. He also had some issues with Tom Penders as a senior. He has made it further than anyone on that team. I will work with him on his free throws. I know exactly what is wrong. I worked with him before his 85% year as a senior at UH. He is a great student. I love the guy.
